Rudi's Bar (Worthing)

Underground Ernie

As you might gather from the name, I’m not afraid to spend the odd hour below ground. Particularly when it comes to boozing!

And while my 9-5 shifts may be on electric, rather than ‘steam’ trains, truth is that when it comes knocking off time it’s all about getting ‘steamed’ as quickly as possible….ha ha ha ha ha.

Besides, any decent drinker knows that boozing solo is as much of a career move as standing on the platform at Green Park mumbling ‘Mind the Gap’into a hand held mic.

And so to the snow.

What luck, I thought as I opened my curtains last Tuesday. A chance for any self-respecting member of the transport sector to take a few days off  (there was clearly no way I could get into central London from Hammersmith).

So, given this golden opportunity, I decided to leave the platform work to the plebs and work on my solo boozing. Jumped in my car (a Toyota Avensis; fuck you for not asking!) and drove down to the South coast for an impromptu holiday.

Sure the roads were a bit tricky, but with a little perseverance I soon made it to my number one staycation destination: Worthing. The South coast’s best kept secret, that’s what I call it.

Now I love boozing and Worthing, but truth be told it’s not all about the lager and tatty art deco seafront. The discount butchers shop, playing slotters on the pier and dining out on Wimpy and KFC, are big draws before the Wetherspoons opens too.

So imagine my joy today, having picked up a tray full of lamb chops for a tenner at the aforementioned butcher’s, when I stumbled across Rudi’s Bar, quite by chance upon exiting the timeless Guildbourne Centre from a side door.

Rudi's excellent gaf. A basement pad no less, with dartboard, corner bar, footy screen and snooker table …. and …erm…not much else. Just a small cavern, with a pair of bogs at the far end.

I still had the old underground driver get-up on (I don’t have any truck for so-called casual clothes) but the landlady took it in her stride. Even the sleeping dog didn’t bat an eyelid.

There I sat undisturbed - pint after pint - comfortable, happy and steaming myself into the ground. All while 'underground'. ha ha ha

Rudi’s bar in Worthing; it’s an underground skivers’ paradise.

Now, stand clear of the doors please; I’m about to chuck me guts up!

Underground Ernie’s rating for Rudi’s bar – 9 / 10

Unfortunately, this train will be terminating at the next station due to personal issues. Apologies for any inconvenience. Christ I'm dying for a pint, shit is this mic still on?

Christ Ernie. Talk about under-selling Worthing. We gave it our Pier of the Year award in 2006!
