George and Dragon (Houghton)

Curious George

Curiosity may have killed the cat, but an enquiring mind never did this monkey any harm.

I’m all over the telly, documentaries aplenty. But unless you’ve got under 5s you may never have seen my particular brand of investigative journalism. Strictly one for the current affairs slot on CBeebies

Who, what, why, when, where! It’s lesson one on any journalism degree. Shortly followed by ducking out of your round in the boozer. Ha ha ha.

Like Robert Peston in an economic crisis I’m always there, asking the right questions. And getting some damn good answers.

Check this out; just a night’s work for a media monkey

1. Why does a frog bang its arse every time it jumps?
A. Something to do with natural selection.

2. What’s the nation’s favourite breed of dog?
A. (trick question). In Britain, the Labrador; in Korea, the tastiest

3. Whatever happened to Innocent Egbunike?
A. Erm, erm…. Yeah, erm, I may have to get back to you * fiddles with emailer on Blackberry writing ‘Rolo – help’  *

I’m not averse to asking the odd question or two down the boozer neither. Why’s there no paper in the traps mate? Could you top up my pint please? When’s closing time?

I’ve got a good question for the landlord in this pub. Nice place, the George and Dragon. Big views over the downs, all that sort of palaver. Should be a corking place for a decent lunch. But something's really got me wondering.....

“Oooh, oooh, oooh,

“hey landlord, over here mate. Ooooh, oooh, oooh. I’m just curious mate; how do you think you can get away charging £10.99 for half a piece of cod in batter and six badly cooked chips piled up like Jenga?”

Curious George’s rating for the George and Dragon – 4 / 10

DISGUSTING - the new tennants  are so rude - the food was utter dire. and the beer is warm - there is nothing more to say,,,

I thought i would try this for a Sunday lunch. . . . . BIG MISTAKE. I like to write objective reviews however this pub is just awfull. The beer is warm,, the food is cold. The manager (Gavin Austin) does not have a clue. He is so rude and cantankerous. Marstons should sack him. I wont be going back. Try it at your peril.

The comments here are obviously written by rude cantankerous individuals. Do unto others as you would be done by. My family and I found the new owners, Gavin and Carol to be very professional and very helpful. We were a large party and there were no untoward delays either in service or attention. Try being friendly next time you write a revue.

Hmm, now as the simian writer of this revue (sic), perhaps you'll allow me to retort. Do unto others as you would be done by? Well, if the owner chooses to be so cynical in his treatment of customers, then he should expect customers to return some of the same. Judging by the comments that follow my revue, seems I was spot on.

Sad to hear this, I ran the george and dragon for four years. It has always been a great pub with great food. Hope they sort it

Oh dear, i've lived locally for many years and despite the fact that this pub has a bad reputation I thought I would try it as they had an advert in the local paper explaining about the new management. Im sorry to say that I had a very bad experience. I recommend the new tenants learn about the hospitality trade with urgency. My glass had lipstick on it (not mine!) and our lunch was simply terrible. sorry to be negative but this place needs shutting down

Well I had a great time at the George & Dragon. Good food, good beer and a great atmosphere. Very good value for money.

I went to the George last night and I have to say that it is without question one of the nicest pubs I have been to. The owners were incredibly hospitable...lovely people. And the views from the garden were equally as beautiful as the barmaid, which was considerable I can tell you. There is nothing that should be changed to this good and honest pub!
